Minutes of the September 22, 2009 Adams Site Council Meeting The meeting started at 5:38 p.m. with introductions Members in Attendance: Claudia Baldwin Patrick Boylan Jennifer Christiansen Judy Kaufmann Tim Leone‐Getten Laura Temali Tammy Villegas Jayné Williams Guests: Christina Sanchez Grant Bonlanger Sarah Hayes Jewell We will designate a secretary at each meeting. Please distribute minutes within one week of the meeting. Approval of the May Site Council minutes with one correction, we are not slated to host a MAIN meeting here this fall (winter date will be confirmed) and one addition, the Kids Against Hunger event will be January 22, 2010 Motion to accept with noted corrections by Tammy Villegas (seconded by Patrick Boylan) – accepted Establish Member List (how to recruit new members) What other teachers? Jennifer and Laura will follow up Tim mentioned having a representative from the LCD group on the Site Council. Laura recommended asking staff to make connections with families. Laura also mentioned that Adams has a bi‐lingual EA who may be able to identify some potential members. Laura will follow‐up. Tim also recommended finding out what families from Adams attend LCD meetings. Claudia offered to check on this. Judy recommended an e‐mail to staff. Parent Involvement Committee is now the Family Involvement Committee What is LCD? Latino Consent Decree Court‐decision that schools in St. Paul provide support to Latino families in a variety of ways Meetings are well attended and coordinated by SPPS district offices. What are the terms of the co‐chairs? Typically year to year and really more around availability. With Laura currently in a dual role as both a staff and parent; are there any questions around this? We have had teachers who were also parents on the Site Council. Laura is in her current position at Adams through November. Principal Report Wonderful summer school/camp experience; PreLAS testing was done at the same time Different master schedule including prep schedule Busing is off to a good start Meet the teacher event was a success as well as Back to School Nights which are going well MCA results – we did not make AYP in reading SpED reading is where we did not make AYP Overarching District Themes 10% gain in reading and math in all sub‐groups Increasing academic rigor RTI and Math: The Classroom Connection (Positive Behavioral Supports) Focus on Literacy – MONDO Money reserved to look at Spanish literacy materials Thank you to Stephanie DeFrance for ??? PALS‐‐ Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening Behavior Assemblies in classrooms Ambassador program with 5th & 6th grade partnering with KG classrooms Will also include reading and buddying programs Our Artist‐in‐Residence is Nicholas Carter who will be present two hours a week for ??? weeks; for fifth grades Involvement with 5th grade students in split class have a number of opportunities; unsure of this Art‐Start will work with 5th grade Amy Cordova creating 3‐4 oaxacan murals; more info in Palabras (Amy illustrated Dream Carver) Intern Liaison position created by PTO is going well – they have a space in the staff lounge Recess before lunch is going well; requires even more attention to being on time Please call Nikol Gordon with any concerns around phone calls Discussion around the beginning of messages being “cut off” on voice messaging Flu Update Obligated to report to Health Dept. There are two criteria (5% of pop. have flu‐like symptoms and three or more children in a classroom exhibiting flu‐like symptoms) Adams is a Title I School (45% free and reduced) More info. as we begin to use the funds New Committees Tech Integration and Leveled Library Committees Staffing is wonderful We have a new band teacher –Jeff Fulton CLIMB Theater will be at Adams on 10/6 with a theme of bullying JumpStart – Oct. 8th all KG reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar Facilities Two portables – everything’s hooked up; teachers are “loving it” (music and science) Painting entire inside of the buildings (going well); classrooms are being displaced to accommodate painting; conference room is reconfigured to allow for classroom space Luli Flores‐Hanson’s class wrote a thank you note to each neighbor who was also presented with a piece of produce from the Salsa garden or local garden They are able to paint one room each day. Sidewalk work adjacent to main door and in front of building Passed fire marshall inspection All diagonal parking will be designated as 15 min. parking Flag inventory being worked on Playground Committee ‐‐ New basketball hoop installed Implementation Audit on October 2nd – to look at Tier I ??? Rights and Responsibilities books were sent home Teacher are adding to their classroom wish lists and the lists will be added to the parent website Questions: Will Brooke’s class take part in PALS? What is LAS Links? Slated to happen in February (both English and Spanish)[rdg. listening, speaking and writing] (not mandated) What grades? 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th KG took the Pre‐LAS Scoring will/may be out‐sourced There may be some changes including group testing (not definitive at this point) Committee Establishment (Laura passed around a sign‐up sheet for committees) • By‐Laws ‐ Jayné • SCIP (School Continuous Improvement Plan) [does this include a curriculum component‐no] ‐ Claudia Baldwin • Family/Community Involvement (host at least one parent information session annually) eight or nine teachers have already signed up; this is a broader group that will be comprised of staff and parents ‐ Laura Temali and Jennifer Christiansen 3 • Support staff (committee design came out of staff needs w/parent support)[will reinstate if needed] • Space [convene as needed] • we need to stay engaged in the process • Split 4/5 (which permits lower class sizes at the fifth grade) • Discussions last year around Spanish Immersion programming and structure • MAIN Committee (Laura will get the dates of upcoming meetings) • Library (Judy will check with PTO on inclusion of this committee on their list) Questions: Does the Site Council have any advocacy role in the Immersion process/discussion? • Difficult for staff to attend since meetings are during the day • Adams was a member of MAIN last year and will be a member this year as well • District has a dual‐immersion cadre which provides support for administrators, etc… • PTO also provides educational immersion opportunities • CARLA at UofMN is also a source of support • There was an effort to get a certification meeting scheduled in St. Paul but there was not the identified 20 staff to merit a change in venue Does Site Council have money to support staff development? Site Council does not have a budget (budgets are not built into the structure; Site Councils serve in an advisory capacity) Expected to hear more about what Immersion Programming means at the KG grade level meeting ‐‐‐ Judy will pass this info. on for future planning Next meeting on October 20, 2009 Minutes recorded by Jayné Williams Meeting adjourned at 7:13 p.m. |
